Hi everyone, welcome to my first blog. I am Ruihan Wang, and you can just call me Gloria. I am a civil engineering major, and I am going to learn architecture design in the future. Now I am living in China, but I think I will back to Irvine very soon since I miss everything in Irvine. Something about last writing class:
To be honest, I didn't get a good grade in 20C, even though I worked hard for that class. That class focused on the relationship between violent games and adolescents. My topic was, "Are Violent First-person Games Making Adolescents More Aggressive?"
In that class, I first truly learned how to write an outline correctly because, until that class, I always thought I was right. Although it didn't feel good when the teacher kept pointing out mistakes and making you modify them over and over again and blamed your messy format of the outline, I was still grateful that this teacher taught me what no one taught me before. Also, I learned how to read the experimental paper efficiently because I had to read and annotated a lot of papers in a short time.
Am I a writer?
I always think I am not a good writer or not a writer. Because in my perspective, the most significant thing for a writer is he needs to express his point in an accurate way. However, when I write, I often use inappropriate words to express, which will cause great misunderstandings to readers. By the way, sentences in my essay usually are not expressed natively, since I am not a native English speaker. Language logic in Chinese affects me deeply. In order to solve this problem, I try to watch more English movies without watching subtitles because listening only with ears exercises my English thinking.
I am better at writing a summary of an article. Compared with understanding article details, grasping the main point of the article is much easier for me.
Language and Grammar Diagnostic at Connect
Actually, the final result is lower than I expected. When answering questions, I feel really good, or I think they are not difficult. However, after seeing the result, I was shocked, because even I saw the answers to some questions I still didn’t know why. Especially I made many mistakes in punctuation, such as quotation marks. I can’t tell when the period or comma should be written in quotation marks.
Core elements
During this class, I need to learn how to connect composition, reading texts, and creating my own Wix. All these missions are themed around Disney movies and gender roles. For doing well in this course, I need to spend at least 12 hours a week to study this course and finish assignments. The most important thing is that no cheating is allowed in this class.
The objective of this course is to teach us to better read, talk, and write about gender roles by learning Disney films. Also, I will learn how Disney makes an effort to break social construction about gender roles.
Grade contract is a basic role in how to grade this class. What is different from usual is that I can get a grade B just base on my completion of the required assignment. In this way, I don't need to think about how to write to please teachers, instead of writing something that can truly improve my writing skills. Undoubtedly, this contact will help us to be better communicators.
Hi Ruihan, I appreciate your efforts in AE 20C and glad to see your improvement in writing outlines. I also have the same problem that I cannot express my meaning appropriately in English and hope we all can make some progresses in the future learning.
Same as you, I also suffered from not being a native student. But I think we could take advantage of this opportunity to learn more. It doesn't matter whether we are native or not, what matters is we try our best to contribute and gain.
